Limp Bizkit Frontman Wins Award at Tribeca Film Festival
This might be old news now, but I’m a bit surprised I didn’t hear anything about it earlier. The Tribeca Film Festival came and went rather quietly this year, running from April 25th to May 6th. Among the films that played this year were Zak Penn’s The Grand, the New Zealand horror comedy Black Sheep, and Dirty Sanchez (the British version of Jackass: The Movie). However, the thing that surprised me most is the film that took home the “Made in NY” Award for the best local film. It was a little flick called The Education of Charlie Banks, better known as the directorial debut of former Limp Bizkit singer Fred Durst! What is this world coming to when Fred Durst is now an award-winning filmmaker?!
At any rate, I’m not too sure if this is an indication of the quality of the movie, or rather the poor quality of films at Tribeca. It seems that in recent years Tribeca has become a big launching pad for films directed by movie stars and celebs. For instance, this year’s fest included films directed by Kevin Connolly, Angelina Jolie, Julie Delpy and Jamie Kennedy, just to name a few. That said, Durst has directed music videos before, and The Education of Charlie Banks stars Jesse Eisenberg (The Squid and the Whale). Maybe we have a new budding auteur on our hands after all?

Posted by Mike on May 24th, 2007Let me play Devil’s Advocate for a moment and suggest that perhaps its’s an okay movie? I haven’t seen it and we should not become the types of critics that talk down on stuff just because of what surrounds it. Then we’d just be like the bigotted politicians and talking heads (I wonder if he has one of their shirts? He should if he’s trying to win hipster cred and all) on TV who talk about censoring stuff without seeing it.
Posted by Ian on May 24th, 2007I don’t know. I’m not sure it’s fair to criticize without seeing ANYTHING from the movie. I looked for a trailer or clip when it played at Tribeca (they have a wicked website) but nothing to found. I wouldn’t mind taking a peek at it.
Posted by Marina on May 24th, 2007But doesn’t the sentence, “Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit wins award at film festival” sound like an April Fools joke to anyone else?
Who knows. Maybe it’s good. Lesser people have made good films I guess. The quick synopsis I read sounded rather meh. Show me a trailer and I’ll eat my words if needs be. I have no pride.
