International Trailer for Wong Kar Wai’s My Blueberry Nights
It’s always interesting to me when a foreign director takes on their first English-language film. The results are usually unpredictable, since working within the Hollywood system can be a very different experience from what they are used to, but at the same time, the finished film is often refreshing and wonderfully unique. Chinese director Wong Kar Wai has an impressive filmography behind him, but it was 2046 that really thrust him into the international spotlight, affording him the opportunity to team up with American crime writer Lawrence Block and bring us My Blueberry Nights.
The movie has an impressive cast that includes Jude Law, Rachel Weisz, Natalie Portman and David Strathairn, not to mention the big screen debut of singer Norah Jones. Jones stars as a young girl on a road trip across America in search of the meaning of love. While this is clearly an art house affair with limited mainstream appeal, I’m curious to see how much attention it gets. Allocine has an international trailer for the film and, as expected, it looks visually breathtaking. My Blueberry Nights premieres at Cannes this week; no word on a theatrical release date as of yet. The trailer does look good but I’m not sold on the story or Jones.
