Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman Take the Long Way Down
One of my favourite reality TV shows of all time is Long Way Round, a 7 episode documentary series that follows Ewan McGregor and his friend Charley Boorman as they ride over 18,000 miles by motorcycle from London to New York. It has the same sense of exploration and challenge that The Amazing Race gives, but without the contrived competition element, which makes it much more about their own sense of self-discovery on the trip. And it’s just so cool to see someone as famous as Ewan McGregor struggling through virtually impassable terrain and living off cans of beans… not to mention all the seriously dangerous situations they manage to get through. Charley Boorman also did another 7 episode series last year called Race to Dakar, where he entered the Dakar Rally, and now it looks like he and McGregor will be hooking back up for another trip this year called Long Way Down, where they will ride from Scotland all the way down to Cape Town, South Africa. The trip starts this month, and the new series will air in September. For more info stay tuned to the official website (linked below). In the meantime, if you’ve never seen Long Way Round, you can currently catch re-runs on the Outdoor Life Network in Canada, or buy it on DVD! (Thanks to Mike for the heads up on this story.)

I’ve only seen bits and pieces of “Long Way Round” but everyone agrees that it’s well worth watching. I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled for “The Long Way Down”.
