Nic Bettauer’s Duck Trailer Starring Philip Baker Hall

When we saw Spider-Man 3 on the weekend, among the trailers that played before it was one for Julie Taymor’s Across The Universe. At the time I remember thinking that it was clearly the wrong audience for it to play to, and indeed after the trailer had finished some little kid said loudly to his parents, “That movie looks wack!” The funny thing is, I can’t really argue with the kid, although it did look to have some amazing imagery too. At any rate… what was my point again? Oh yeah, if they thought Across The Universe was weird, I can only imagine what they would think if the trailer for Nicole Bettauer’s Duck had been playing instead.

The movie stars Philip Baker Hall as a retired history professor who is depressed and alone after the death of his wife and son. He stumbles across a young, orphaned duckling, who begins to follow him around. When L.A.’s last local park is closed up, the duck is left homeless, and the two embark on an epic quest for “water and meaning, in the desert that is L.A.”. In other words, it’s a modern retelling of Follow That Bird. (No, it’s not.) Although the movie does seem a little strange and offbeat, it also feels strikingly original and won a handful of awards at various festivals. Duck is slated for a limited release at some point this month; check out the trailer for Duck now and see just how weird it really is.
