Monday Morning Box Office Report: May 7, 2007

This is why you don’t want to put your movie up against a massive blockbuster in its opening weekend. Spider-Man 3 obliterated the competition, shattering the record for first weekend box office with $148 million (the previous record was held by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest with $135 million). The next closest movie was only $143 million behind, as Disturbia managed to stay a top the rest of the pack with $5.72 million. Lucky You, the only other new major release for the week, placed a distant 6th with $2.52 million. Whether or not the critics and fanboys liked Spider-Man 3 seems to be a moot point, because this is definitely a hot start for the summer movie season.

  1. despite all the bad reviews Spidey prevails, i have yet to see it. didnt want to go opening weekend, i hate crowds so i will wait a week or so and then go and see it.

  2. is there still anyone who really thinks Transformers is going to outdo this?

  3. No, not Transformers. I think Shrek or Pirates are the only ones that have a shot at topping it this summer.

  4. No way with Shrek or Transformers. Pirates maybe, but many were disappointed with Shrek 2.
