Iran Responds to 300 with Glory of Persepolis Documentary
When 300 hit theatres back in March, we started to hear about reports of Iran being outraged at the portrayal of their Persian ancestors in the film. They even went so far as to say it was part of a vast Hollywood conspiracy to discredit Iranian culture. Well now it seems they have delivered a proper rebuttal to Zack Snyder’s film in the form of a documentary entitled Glory of Persepolis.
A special screening was held for the film this week in Iran, where it was acknowledged that the project had first been proposed by Iran’s Cultural Heritage Organization back in 2003. The offensive nature of 300, however, inspired them to push forward with it. “The production of the proposed film was materialized through the efforts of the Parseh Research Foundation team working on it, which is now used to introduce Persepolis to visitors and give them an idea on this world famous ancient monument prior to touring it,” said Mohammad-Hassan Talebian, head of the Parseh Research Foundation. So wait a minute… this is an informational film about the ancient site of Persepolis aimed at tourists? How is this a proper response to 300? I fail to see the connection. While I’d love to hear and understand their side of the argument, the movie itself sounds way too boring. If they really want to make a big issue out of 300 in particular, I think they need to address it directly. As it stands right now, no one will see this documentary.

IT WAS A MOVIE BASED OFF A COMIC BOOK!! GET OVER IT, IRAN!! Seriously, a lot has happened since 2500 years ago. This crap pisses me off.

The government of Iran are telling the iranian people these things to make them feel like america is trying to destroy their way of life. It’s not that these highly informed and educated people are honestly feeling that 300 represents anything but entertainment, they are just exploiting the movie as a justification for their indoctrination of their people. Stop posting about this ‘controversy’. Please.

Wouldn’t the Americans mind if the British mocked the events that lead to America’s independence? This is distorting history, is it not? However, the point is that the Iranian film producing industry does not seem to have the required technological facilities to make a film in the scale and grade of 300 which was produced via the usage of the latest film making equipment, to fight it back. Moreover, they rightly want to show they are being impartial, so they have chosen to make a documentary. Historical evidence shows that 300 is biased and this cannot be denied after all, can it?
