Superman Doomsday Animated Trailer Hits The Web
Last month we reported on a new Superman Direct to DVD animated movie that was in the works called Superman: Doomsday, based on The Death of Superman storyline. Now I’m not the biggest Superman fan in the world, but the fact that it was being produced and written by Bruce Timm (co-director of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm), made me think it might be a cut above some of the Marvel animated movies that have been coming out lately. A teaser trailer has arrived online and it looks decent, although with YouTube video quality it’s hard to tell exactly how good the animation will be. There definitely looks to be some 3D elements added in, which I am generally not a fan of, but I’ll still give this one a chance. The movie is being co-written and directed by Duane Capizzi (Superman: Braniac Attacks, The Batman vs Dracula) and features the voices of Adam Baldwin, Anne Heche and James Marsters. Superman: Doomsday hits stores on September 18th.

This is a real shame.
I really enjoyed the Superman cartonn that aired a few years back (the one this is clearly intended to be related to – it was the Superman version of Batman: TAS for any of you that missed it) – but the quality looks like it’s take a bit of a nose dive. Here’s my biggest beef though.
Remember the Spiderman cartoon that ran in the early 90’s? They had a brilliant formula. Rather than telling a one off story, they kept it true to its comics roots and, if they needed 6 or 8 episodes to tell a story, they’d do that. That’s the sort of thing the Death of Superman needs. Pretty much a full season of a cartoon. 26 half hour episodes. There’s the build up to it, the actual death, the funeral portion, the arrival and development of the four supermen, the return of the original, and the climax. There’s no way you can fit all of that into a 90 minute DVD. Can’t happen. That’s like trying to tell the story of the Bible on a two-night ABC movie – you’re going to have to cut most of it out to cram it in there.
