Indian Court Issues Warrant for Richard Gere’s Arrest
The Richard Gere/Shilpa Shetty situation got a little more complicated this week as an Indian court issued a warrant for the arrest of the pair after their wild on-stage kiss offended local conservative views. Judge Dinesh Gupta called the kiss “highly sexually erotic” and said they had “transgressed all limits of vulgarity”. Clearly he needs to watch more internet porn. At any rate, it seems that the arrest warrants are a lot less serious than they sound. Although technically they could face up to three months in prison, in India anyone can file a lawsuit against a celebrity for doing something they disagree with. It seems unlikely that anything will come of it. Gere recently called for everyone to put an end to the media circus surrounding the mishap. “My clumsy attempt at a Shall We Dance dance move was a naive misread of Indian customs,” he said. It is unclear what will happen the next time Gere returns to India, however, and he is said to visit often since he is a “devout Buddhist” and meets frequently with the Dalai Lama.
