Bruce Campbell To Star in Richard Stanley’s Vacation
Everyone loves Bruce Campbell, and understandably so. He is a handsome and charismatic man (sort of a George Clooney of the b-movie world), plus he was in a few of those ultra obscure cult horror movies that Sam Raimi directed… oh I forget what they’re called. Anyway, it looks like Raimi couldn’t swing another bit part for him in Spider-Man 3, so Campbell’s next screen appearance will be in the movie They Call Me Bruce (or is it My Name is Bruce? I think they may have renamed it to avoid confusion with the 80’s comedy of the same name). This is a movie I’ve been curious about mainly because he plays a caricature of himself as an action hero in real life, but I gotta say, I’m also a bit worried by the fact that he is directing it himself. I haven’t heard good things about The Man With The Screaming Brain.
Luckily, if this one doesn’t pan out there’s already another project on the horizon for Campbell, and it looks like he will be teaming up with South African director Richard Stanley for a movie called Vacation. It’s described as “a low budget sci-fi horror” where “an apocalyptic solar storm destroys the west, forcing the luckless Americans to come to terms with a medieval, year zero environment and a hostile culture that holds them responsible for the world’s pain. Sort of Lord of the Flies with credit cards. Oh, and Muslims. Them too.” Sounds like a perfect Bruce Campbell cult classic in the making. Campbell will play the lead role as “an aging banker who still fancies himself as a surfer and ends up trapped with his lap dancer girlfriend in a shabby, middle eastern beach resort”. Count me in on this one. I don’t know much about Stanley’s past work, but his biggest project to date was probably the 1996 remake of The Island of Dr. Moreau… too bad he got canned a few days into production! Stay tuned to Stanley’s MySpace blog for more updates on the film; he is hoping to start shooting in October.
