Mayor of Boston Calls for Aqua Teen Boycott

Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters is opening in select U.S. theatres this weekend (877 of them to be exact), and as we all know, it probably wouldn’t be playing in quite as many locations if it weren’t for the publicity generated by the whole “accidental terror alert” caused by their Mooninite marketing campaign and jumpy city officials in Boston. Despite the fact that Turner Broadcasting System ended up paying out some 2 million dollars in damages, Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino still has a gigantic chip on his shoulder. He is calling for the local cineplexes to boycott the film, “out of respect to the people of Boston”. While it seems unlikely that they will comply with his wishes, you have to wonder why he’s even bothering at this point.

I suppose it might have something to do with the fact that this ridiculous cartoon was responsible for making him look like a fool. (Personally, I still don’t understand how any of the blame can be placed on the Adult Swim people, but I digress.) The real issue here is, why give them even more free publicity? This movie was always destined to have a pretty small theatrical run, and I still don’t think there’s much hope of it catching on and expanding further. It seems like 90% of people I talk to still have no idea what Aqua Teen Hunger Force is, and all the reviews I’ve read say it only appeals to hardcore fans in the first place. Just let it go already!

  1. “Out of respect”? This sounds like a statement that somebody from New York who’s living alone with cats would make about World Trade Center.

This guy sounds like a fucking asshole. I have no idea what Aqua Teen Hunger Force is, but reading this makes me hope it makes alot of money, none more so than in Boston hopefully.

  2. This is sad. It was sad the first time it happened. The fact that the two guys putting up the Lite-Brites got arraigned on Terrorist Charges made me weep for humanity. I have been a fan of the show since I saw the 2nd episode. Still my favourite.I hope it gets all the publicity it can, good and bad and I hope it makes as much money as possible.

  3. Seriously pathetic. What else can you even say?
