This Week on DVD – Apr. 10, 2007

So what DVDs are hitting stores today? The only major release is Emilio’s Bobby; I never got a chance to see this when it was in theatres, but it did get a lot of decent reviews. Also a few special edition double-dips, including Mel Gibson’s Payback and the comedy classic Major League, while Anchor Bay releases a new version of Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm (along with Phantasm III for the first time). Documentary fans might also consider checking out My Father, The Genius or Danielson: A Family Movie, and as far as TV goes we have the first volume of The Untouchables series, and the third season of Scooby Doo Where Are You?

  1. Bobby was OK but you’re not missing anything by not watching it. Really just a so so movie with a HUGE cast.

  2. “How William Shatner changed the world”? What the heck is that all about?

  3. I had completely forgotten the Payback director’s cut was coming out around now! Thanks for the head’s up.

Just so you know, the director’s cut isn’t any ordinary double dip. It’s a complete overhaul of the movie, and supposedly sticks much closer to Richard Stark’s work than what ended up on the screen.

  4. Payback isn’t your typical ‘double dip’. Isn’t this like a new version of the film, its totally different isn’t it?

  5. You forgot to mention (on the podcast too) Jonestown: Life and Death of the People’s Temple, which I bought and watched, and enjoyed very much!
