Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain Gets Revised DVD Artwork

A few months back I wrote a piece on the annoyances of bad DVD artwork, where studios often slap boring headshots of stars on the cover in a cheap ploy to move units. I argued that a colourful and well-designed cover would actually be more attention grabbing than an extreme close-up of Matt Damon’s forehead. Recently I stumbled across another blogger’s post on the same topic; it happened to get a heck of a lot more love on Digg, but hey, I’m not bitter! One of the DVDs he mentioned was the upcoming release of The Fountain, which, as it turns out, is one case where I didn’t really think the artwork was all that terrible myself (hey, it is a love story, people!). But apparently a lot of film geeks take exception to their DVD covers looking all soft and sensitive-like, so he’s not alone in that sentiment.

Strangely, word has come down from Warner Home Video this week that they’ve just now redesigned the artwork for The Fountain. Could it be…? A studio actually putting a little more effort into their DVD covers? Someone actually responding to the requests of fans and collectors? Probably not, but hey, whatever the reasoning is, I will say that the revised cover is at least a moderate improvement and hints a little more at the trippy visuals that the movie supposedly brings. I am still pretty curious to find out why they felt the need to rework the cover though. In some cases the early DVD artwork we see is not final, but this one even had the critic quotes on it already. (If anyone out there knows the full story, drop us a line!) So do you prefer the new cover or what? The Fountain will be available on DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray on May 15th.

  1. WTF The Fountain didn’t even come out here yet and it’s coming out on dvd already. FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!!!!!!!

  2. At this point, I don’t care about the cover art. Just get the bloody thing out so I can watch it again.

  3. And here I thought I was the only one that noticed this heinous act! :P

    A lot of the offenders don’t always take the form of displaying the actors, but cashing in on other films. Take Carlito’s Way – brilliant film, but to move units on the collector’s edition that came out last year, they tried to make the box art look as much like Scarface as possible.

    As much as this annoys me in films, the differing box art between regions for video games really drives me batty. The biggest offender here would have to be Ico. It’s the only game in my opinion that could simulatenously earn the worst box art ever awatd (for the North American release) and best box art ever (for Europe and Japan.) You can check out the two versions here;

  4. Assuming the new one is the one with ‘widescreen’ written on the top, I love this redesign.
