Open Forum Friday: Is Adam Sandler Still Funny?
The recent trailer for Adam Sandler’s next movie I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry made me reminisce back to a time when Sandler was king. I remember his work on SNL fondly; when I was in high school his first comedy album They’re All Gonna Laugh At You was the absolute pinnacle of humour for me and just about everyone I knew. His first few feature films were hysterical and still hold up today if you ask me, but lately I haven’t been all that interested in seeing any of his new movies. I think the last Sandler movie I saw was The Longest Yard, a pointless remake that made me chuckle maybe once or twice. It just made me think, is this guy even relevant anymore?
I know that Adam Sandler still has a lot of dedicated fans out there. Heck, Click was the 13th highest grossing movie of 2006. Maybe I’m in the minority here, but you can’t tell me that he still has the same mischievous charm today that he did in Billy Madison. His attempts to branch out have met with mixed results; Punch Drunk Love was critically acclaimed, Spanglish and Reign Over Me less so, but I still have a problem seeing him in anything other than comedic roles. So let me throw it out to you, the readers… is Adam Sandler washed up and past his prime? Have his movies stopped making you laugh? Or is he still finding a way to stay on top with his choice of roles and Happy Madison production company? Give us your thoughts here on Open Forum Friday.

The dude was never really funny to begin with anyways, I’m just glad everyone seems to be coming around to my way of thinking now.
Posted by evil homer on March 30th, 2007Well, I seem to be the same way you are Sean. I used to love him, now I don’t. I think this accounts for his “growth” as an actor and as a star and our own growth as people. He was that funny guy that made jizz jokes, now he’s that guy that makes romantic comedies and that same face over and over. It’s just not as funny anymore.
Posted by Paul on March 30th, 2007He’s made one really funny movie and that was Happy Gilmore. Everything else is just an awful ummm joke
Posted by The man on March 31st, 2007when he was young his types of movies seemed more bizarre and the style hadnt been done to death, and he had a different energy than anyone else going.
he’s simply mellowed out, and acting crazy seems dishonest, and without his more bizarre edge he’s just a mumbly guy producing shitty horrible movies for his friends.
sticking to drama or light romantic comedies (that we probably wouldnt see anyways) would actually probably be better for him than trying to make another movie like Billy Madison.
Posted by Goon on March 31st, 2007I think he’s still funny he’s just keeps surronding himself -in the comedies – with the same people he’s always been with and they’ve just got every movie down to a comedy formula. What he really needs is some fresh blood around him.
Also i find it funny that he’s taking chances with more serious roles when what he really needs is to take some chances with his comedy.
