Mortal Kombat 3 Will Start From Scratch
“Reboot” is a word we’re hearing thrown around a lot in Hollywood lately, and it seems to turn up whenever someone’s talking about a great franchise that has since fallen on hard times. Batman, Superman, Star Trek, James Bond… all these franchises were once serious box office contenders, and now they are being restarted in order to remove the bad taste left in moviegoers’ mouths by its most recent flops. I don’t have a problem with the strategy overall; it seems to make good sense, although in some cases it cancels out characters and storylines from previous films. I can live with that.
But what about a franchise that was never very good to begin with? There has been talk of a third Mortal Kombat movie for some time now, and although I understood the appeal when the first one came out, I don’t see how anyone could think there is still a market for such a thing nowadays. (Here’s where angry MK fans come out of the woodwork to prove me wrong.) Last I heard, MK3 was supposed to be a prequel, but now it appears that it will have no ties whatsoever to the previous films. That’s right, it’s going to be a complete reboot… as if this will help redeem the Mortal Kombat name. Say what you will, but according to IMDb, the director of the movie is a guy named “mink”… need I say more? You’d think after ten years they’d finally throw in the towel, but apparently the world just can’t live without another Mortal Kombat flick.

Posted by Centipede on September 10th, 2007i think the mortal kombat franchise is slowly dying, but if they release another movie, ill probably still go see it,i mean yea the last one sucked balls but the fighting was cool, its kinda like ong-bak or the protector, both very crapy stories but the fighting was cool. Its not like the third movie can suck more than the second, its not humanly possible,so it will either do the same or a little better,u never know.but whatever, opinions rule the world.
Posted by anthony (12/7/07-1:28 pm) on December 7th, 2007Any kind of movie can be great if it is written and filmed like someone gave a dam. The first MK movie was not that bad, but the 2nd on was a p.o.s.. The second had bad acting, corny cgi, and I think Liu Kang was the only character that made it from the first. I think a revamp would be the way to go if they made a 3rd. Get the Transporter guy to play stryker, Wesly Snipes for Jax, Jet Li for Liu Kang (or the same guy or Chong Lee from bloodsport), and so on. Look at all the comic book movies that have came out, most of them have been awesome. If people put effort into a movie, it will most likely be worth watching. And don’t anybody go busting my chops about budgets and fan base.
Posted by Dan on September 19th, 2008I love Mortal Kombat, it is an iconic game, how can you say the franchise is dead? In terms of the movies though they killed it with Annihilation so lets hope if this new movie ever happens they make it something special!
Posted by JC on September 21st, 2008Annihilation is going to be the bad taste in people’s mouths for a LONG time.
