Trailer for The Savages Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney
I don’t know about you, but I love a good dramedy. Although it’s a style of movie that a lot of people are trying to imitate nowadays, I find that the movies that can make you laugh while also telling a serious dramatic story are still something of a rare treat. Tamara Jenkins’ upcoming film The Savages looks to have all the right elements in place however, and after watching the newly released trailer I think this is a movie we’ll be hearing a lot about in the near future. The movie stars Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman as a sister and brother who must come together to care for their estranged father when he falls ill. Of course, their father (Philip Bosco) is a cranky old bastard who is developing dementia (typical comedy tool, yes, but stick with me here) and they struggle with the decision to put him in an old age home. I’m sure this is going to be a movie that hits home with a lot of people, and with two amazing actors like Hoffman and Linney you really can’t go wrong. After Alan Arkin took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor this year, could Bosco do the same here? We’ll see. Speaking of overused tools, why does every indie flick have to use the same Spoon song in their trailers lately? The Savages is expected to hit theatres sometime later this year.

Ever since I read about it in the post-Sundance reviews, I’ve been excited–most especially for the underrated character actor Bosco, who has been toiling in average movies as a great source of comic relief (Save for the brilliant rom-com, The First Wives’ Club! =D). I’m so happy he’s been getting such great feedback. The trailer itself is brilliant, because it’s subtle but promising. It doesn’t cause you to expect too much, but implies you’re in store for something enjoyable. I can’t wait until the fall for this to be released. Oh, and by the way–what IS the song in the trailer? I like it, but I can’t figure out the title. Thanks!
