The Host To Get U.S. Remake

I still have yet to see the Korean monster flick The Host, but it opened in select North American theatres last weekend and reviews have been solid. Not surprisingly, it appears that the movie has already been picked up for a U.S. remake. Universal recently purchased the rights to the film, which has become the highest grossing South Korean film of all time. Director Bong Joon-ho had this to say: “If The Host [remake] comes out, and there’s a cool director who takes it on and makes it a real great film, then I’d be very happy… On the other hand, if it’s just crap, I think I’d be happy, too, because then people would be like, ‘Oh, yeah, Bong’s original was really good.’ So, for me, it’s a win-win situation. But Universal has a tradition of doing horror and creature films, so I anticipate that they will do a great film.” Somehow I have a feeling that the second scenario is more likely, but I suppose we’ll have to wait and see who’s involved. Is this remake just an exercise in futility? I really wish they could simply give the original a wider release instead.
