Maggie Gyllenhaal to Replace Katie Holmes in The Dark Knight

A while back there were rumours that Jake Gyllenhaal had been cast as Two-Face in Christopher Nolan’s next Batman movie, The Dark Knight. At the time it seemed hard to believe since we already knew Heath Ledger was The Joker, and would anyone really want to subject their film to the inevitable Brokeback Mountain references? Well now we definitely know it wasn’t true, obviously, since Aaron Eckhart landed the role, however, in an interesting twist it appears that Jake’s sister Maggie will appear in the film instead.

Maggie Gyllenhaal will reportedly play Rachel Dawes, district attorney, love interest and childhood friend of Bruce Wayne. You may recall that Katie Holmes had played this role in Batman Begins, but turned down an offer to return for the sequel due to “scheduling conflicts”. And fanboys across the world rejoiced since they had all picked on her as being the only weak part of the first film! Well, I can say with some confidence that Gyllenhaal will act circles around Holmes’ performance. Here’s the thing: is this cast starting to get a little too heavy with A-list talent? Is such a thing even possible? We’ll find out sometime in 2008.

  1. A-list talent eh? I definitely wouldn’t go that far. I suppose Heath Ledger is getting up there, but Christian Bale, Aaron Eckhart and Maggie Gyllenhaal are hardly household names.

It’s the character that’s ridiculous. Not the actress. I definitely wouldn’t agree it was the weakest part of the first movie, but it was a bad character. Just get rid of the whole “Bruce Wayne is a real person, we need to focus on his character etc. etc.” nobody cares about that bullshit. I still think of that comment Jay made about turning calculators into supercomputers and it totally applies.

I like Batman, I liked how the suit looked in the first one, so if they just get rid of all the Bruce Wayne moping around cliché’d issues, I’m game for some Joker action. This doesn’t change how I feel about the movie though, since the character is what needs to be dealt with.

  2. I would have to say this is the indie A listers movie. All are respected actors but all are just under that line of superstardom which is good. Eckhart is begining to get famous, Christian Bale’s big break out role was Batman begins, and Maggie G and Ledger how now arrived in meaningful films. It’s certainly no Ocean’s 11.

  3. i had no problem with the Rachel Dawes character or Katie Holmes in it. i didnt necessarily care for her in a positive sense either but anyone who thought she ‘ruined’ the movie is probably reading too many TomKat tabloids.

that said, Gyllenhaal is probably a better actress to Nolan’s style of moviemaking.

  4. Too much A-list talent? Yeah that’s what made Burton’s Batman suck so bad. Too many a-listers. LOL Give me a break!
