Fox Greenlights M. Night Shyamalan’s Happening
Well apparently someone’s interested in M. Night Shyamalan’s next movie after all… he just signed a deal with 20th Century Fox to shoot The Happening, a sci-fi thriller that previously went under the name “The Green Effect”. After shopping the idea around a few months ago, none of the studios would bite, but he took their feedback into consideration and rewrote the script… which resulted in Fox acquiring it and setting it up for a tentative June 2008 release. It sounds like Shyamalan may have been humbled and is now learning to take criticism. Imagine that!
“People who work with me know that I’m collaborative… If you can give me a good idea that can help me to make a better movie, then there is no ego issue in taking that advice. Ultimately, this was a very positive process, and one that will ultimately help in making this movie the best it can be.” The movie is being described as a “paranoid thriller about a family on the run from a natural crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity”, and will reportedly carry a $75 million budget. It will be shot while he writes the script for Avatar: The Last Airbender, and it will be his first R-rated movie, inspired in part by the harder-edged fantasy of Pan’s Labyrinth. It sounds like working with some new people has opened Shyamalan’s eyes, and this could be an important step in his maturation as a filmmaker. I’m pretty curious to see how this one turns out, and whether or not he can win back the public’s adoration.

First of all I 100% believe that quote. Not just that he said, but that he is telling the truth.
I am excited about this movie. He has convinced me. His last two movies I was not excited about at all when I heard about them, and when I saw the trailers I thought they looked even more uninteresting, but they both turned out to be awesome movies when I saw them. He is my favourite living director, and one of the only people in hollywood that I get excited about doing something.
Posted by Henrik on March 7th, 2007The title is horrible though, but his last two titles were pretty wack too.
Posted by Henrik on March 7th, 2007I agree, this could be a new beginning for Shyamalan and I’d be willing to him the guy another shot if the film looked good but I agree with Henrik, bad title.
