Here’s a Great Idea: Another Weekend At Bernie’s Sequel!

Ahh yes… Weekend At Bernie’s. That late 80’s comedy classic about two slackers who find their boss murdered, but pretend he’s still alive so that they can continue partying at his beach house. When this movie came out, people thought the concept was so hilarious that it deserved two movies… thus the 1993 sequel Weekend at Bernie’s II. Now, some 14 years later, the gods of cinema have handed down a commandment to make this epic franchise into a trilogy. That’s right, Next Weekend at Bernie’s is currently in the works over at MGM under the supervision of producers Ashok Amritraj and Jon Jashni (Shopgirl, Premonition). This time the hilarity will take place at a ski lodge instead of a beach house. It’s a bit unclear whether this is intended as a remake or a sequel… the title seems to indicate sequel, but it’s being described as a retelling of the original. Not that it really matters. I really can’t see audiences picking up on something like this nowadays, unless they can market it as a really dumb, ironic comedy like Dude Where’s My Car? Maybe they should cast Harold and Kumar in it too. But is this really worth spending time and money on?
