J.J. Abrams Confirmed as Director of Star Trek XI

After much speculation that J.J. Abrams may have been dropped from the Star Trek XI project (or just left to pursue other projects instead) it has been confirmed this week that he is actually still on board and will indeed be seated in the director’s chair when it heads into production later this year. There isn’t much else known about the project at this point, but it is still believed that the movie will be a prequel that finds Kirk and Spock participating in their first mission at Starfleet Academy. What do you think, is Abrams the right man for the job? Was his feature film directorial debut M:I3 a good indication of what to expect from him? I like Abrams but I still have some doubts. If they want to get away from the common complaint that recent Star Trek films just felt like extended TV episodes, they probably shouldn’t have recruited a TV director to helm it!

  1. I’m a bit skeptical of Abrams being the right guy for this franchise. It would be great if he could revitalize it but I’m not completely sold on the story line which is kicking around. That said, until we know a bit more, I reserve judgment.

BTW, that’s a great picture of Abrams. He looks like such a dweeb.

  2. Abrams TV shows start off strong but go down hill way fast. Maybe movies would be more his thing.

  3. man, i dont know if thats a good argument. he isnt really directly involved in the production of this shows. and if you mean “lost” i simply disagree. i dont know why people are so impatient. i treat Lost like “the Wire” - as a novel type show. in this case, one that is just over halfway done. i dont know why people are so anxious for answers that would essentially end the show. if it ends like shit then it ends like shit, but for now its still among one of the best hours of tv, its clever, has intelligent cross references and philosophical/religious themes, great acting, and from time to time like the Desmond episode from a couple weeks back is still as fresh as it initially was.

  4. For Star Trek XI, if Abrams hired William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy to mud wrestle, I’d still pay money to see it.

For me, bad Star Trek is still better than no Star Trek. But I wish they would hire a science fiction writer to add some imagination back into the franchise.

  5. But how do you feel about Really Bad Star Trek?
