Trailer for Philip K. Dick Adaptation: Next Starring Nicolas Cage

The fiction of Philip K. Dick has served as the source material for a large number of great movies, from Total Recall to Blade Runner, Minority Report to A Scanner Darkly. It seems like there are always a least a couple movies in the works based on his writing at any given time, and yet, despite the ubiquity of Mr. Dick in Hollywood, I’m always excited when I hear about another one of his stories coming to life on the big screen.

A trailer has just gone online for an upcoming movie called Next; it’s based on the short story The Golden Man and stars Nicolas Cage as Cris Johnson (would have been cooler if it was Criss Angel), a man who can see briefly into the future. When the government learns that a terrorist group plans to detonate a nuclear device in L.A., they must track down Johnson and convince him to use his ability to stop the attack. Watching the trailer, it feels like we’ve seen a lot of this stuff before; for instance, the scene from Minority Report where the psychic helps John Anderton outrun his assailants, or the weird eye goggles that Keanu wore in A Scanner Darkly. It also feels a bit like the recent Tony Scott film Deja Vu. Still, I can’t help but be interested in this flick, although Nicolas Cage seems miscast, and director Lee Tamahori boasts such dubious credits as xXx: State of the Union and Die Another Day. Jessica Biel and Julianne Moore co-star. Next hits theatres on April 27th, click below to watch the trailer now.

  1. Try as I might, this trailer just won’t play for me. Even without seeing it I can say I’m looking forward to it simply because it’s based on Dick’s story. The guy was a genius. A bit messed up but a genius none the less.

  2. Finally had a chance to see the bloody trailer and it looks like fairly standard fare. Should be fun.
