J.J. Abrams In Talks To Adapt Stephen King’s Dark Tower series

Anyone in the market for another Stephen King adaptation? Sure, why not, right? You know, I won’t be surprised if every single story that Stephen King has written eventually ends up on screen in some form; granted, it will take quite a few years to accomplish this feat. The latest King property up for translation is his epic fantasy/sci-fi/horror/western series The Dark Tower. Although details are still rather slim, two sources have recently confirmed reports that J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias, M:I3) is in talks to bring this story to the screen. It remains to be seen, however, whether they are aiming for the small screen or the big screen.

Considering the fact that The Dark Tower spans 7 books, I am guessing that Abrams and King himself would prefer to do it as a TV series of some sort. Then again, a lot of movie studios are looking for reliable movie franchises with a built-in fanbase similar to The Lord of the Rings, so perhaps there is a chance we’ll see each book as its own movie. The most interesting part of this story, however, is that it lends some credibility to the pesky rumours that Abrams has left the Star Trek XI project. If this is the case, The Dark Tower would still be a pretty sweet opportunity to take the place of a Trek movie. I’m not sure I completely buy it though… we don’t even know if Abrams is directing either project himself, so there’s no reason he couldn’t simply be producing both. Hopefully we’ll hear the official word soon.

  1. I also remember reading somewhere maybe the wiki that Genndy Tartakovsky of Samurai Jack and Clone Wars animtaion fame was trying to adapt that series into an animation for HBO.

  2. You could probably do it as a trilogy of 3 movies by just compressing things and foregoings some flashbacks. But even so, there’s no way that movie audiences would accept what happens at the end of book 7 as the epilogue to a series of films. A miniseries I could see, but you’d have to have a pretty insane budget and do it on HBO or something to make it worth it.
