More Comics To The Big Screen: The Couriers and Frank Miller’s Ronin
The trend of comics being committed to celluloid continues this week, with announcements of two more new adaptations in the works. The first is another Frank Miller graphic novel (this guy owes Robert Rodriguez a debt of gratitude for making him a hot commodity in Hollywood). Ronin merges two eras into one story that will make fanboys weak in the knees: in a not to distant post-apocalyptic future, a samurai from feudal Japan is reborn as a cybernetic human with telekinetic powers. I haven’t read it, but like all good sci-fi geeks I think I’m going to have to look it up now. Sylvain White (Stomp The Yard, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer) is apparently on board to direct, although looking at his past work I’m a bit worried.
The other upcoming project is based on Brian Wood’s graphic novel series The Couriers, another comic taking place in a near-future setting where Moustafa and Special are well-armed mercenaries who transport just about anything if the price is right. Many reviews of the comic mention that it is heavily influenced by Hong Kong cinema, and Cinematical reports that Lost scribe Javier Grillo-Marxuach is penning the script. I think I’m actually more interested in this project, although it does run the risk of turning into another Johnny Mnemonic (which, I think we can all agree, is not something this world needs). I’m looking forward to hearing more about a director for this one.
