Sony Confirms Involvement in Metal Gear Solid Feature Film
With all the crappy video game to movie adaptations that have been released over the past couple of years, a lot of people are starting to wonder if there really are any games out there that could work as a movie. Well, right near the top of my list of games that are primed for the big screen treatment is Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid series, known for its epic cut scenes and long-winded dialogue. Last year at E3 Kojima revealed that a Metal Gear feature film was moving forward, and, more importantly, that it would NOT involve Dr. Uwe Boll. “I have finalized a Class-A contract with a party in Hollywood,” he said at the time.
This week, Sony Pictures Entertainment have revealed that they are the lucky studio working on the project. At the DICE summit in Las Vegas, vice chairman Yair Landau had this to say: “It’s a very cinematic game, it really lends itself to movie telling. But the question is, ‘How do you translate Snake’s experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?’” No word yet on a director or any casting details, but with some decent talent I think there’s potential here for a good movie… probably even more than the ill-fated Halo feature film project. On a side note, I wonder if they are considering bringing in David Hayter, the distinctive voice of Solid Snake, to play him on the big screen. Hayter is an actor, although he’s probably more well-known as a screenwriter of such films as X-Men, The Scorpion King and the upcoming Watchmen flick. Who do you think should play Snake?

I love David Hayter. X-Men 1 was as good a script as you could hope for, and his X2 script was awesome, but got bastardized (and nutured) by bullshit pet writers of Bryan Singer, Dan Harris and Mike Dougherty. That being said, I didn’t know he wrote a Watchmen script. That just makes me sad.
Anyway, I have never played any of these games, and from what I’ve heard I have no interest. I seriously doubt David Hayter could play an action-hero though. He doesn’t exactly have a movie-star look, and he’s also kind of on the old side.
