The Power of the Dark Crystal on Hold Indefinitely?
Out of all the sequels and remakes that are being developed out there right now, it figures that they had to go and shelve one of the few interesting ones. Last year it was announced that a sequel to Jim Henson’s cult classic The Dark Crystal was being directed by Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky. The Power of the Dark Crystal was going to employ muppets in CG environments, and I for one was looking forward to seeing what would come of this unique project. Unfortunately it seems that the movie has now been put on hold indefinitely, despite some promising pre-production work that had already been done.
No one seems to know why it has been canned at this point, although perhaps The Jim Henson Company realized that there might not be as big of a market for this as they had originally thought. Instead they are going to concentrate on some other movies based on books like The Doubtful Guest and Monster Blood Tattoo. But wouldn’t something with a built-in fanbase be more lucrative? I suppose we’ll have to wait for an official announcement if we want an explanation. As for Tartakovsky, I wonder if this means he will turn his attention back to that Astro Boy movie now?

That’s too bad. it would have been great to see this story updated. Hopefully they won’t wait too long!
Posted by Marina on February 5th, 2007this was one of my all-time favorite films as a child – i can only hope that this project is picked back up. i tend to follow the thought that when film making moves towards too many sequels, originality is slipping away. however, this one would be really interesting to see in CG.
