Brian De Palma and Mark Cuban Tackle Iraq War with Redacted

After Brian De Palma’s last movie The Black Dahlia failed to catch on with either audiences or critics (hey, I happened to like it), it seems he has decided to join forces with rebel billionaire Mark Cuban for something just a little bit different. De Palma will be heading to Jordan this spring where he is shooting an Iraq war drama called Redacted, featuring interwoven stories of several soldiers, and touching on media coverage and communication in the digital age.

The movie is being shot on High Definition Video, and will be another simultaneous day-and-date release from Cuban’s 2929 Entertainment. Similar to Steven Soderbergh’s Bubble, Redacted will be available in theatres, on HD Net cable TV, and on DVD all on the same day. Casting has yet to be announced, but I wonder if they’re going to go with non-actors in the same way that Bubble did? One of the reasons they’re using the simultaneous release strategy is to get this movie out in a timely manner; they’re hoping to have it released sometime this fall. Either way, it promises to be another interesting experiment… I’m really looking forward to this.

  1. I thought The Black Dahlia was decent as well. Brian De Palma seems to be a fairly inconsistent director but this looks quite exciting.
