Babel Writer and Director Feud Over Credit For Film

What is it about Oscar-nominated films that always seems to bring out greed and jealousy from those who were involved? In the last year or two there have been lawsuits connected to both Crash and Brokeback Mountain where people felt they had not been compensated fairly, and now it appears that the success of Babel has driven a rift between the film’s writing/directing duo of Guillermo Arriaga and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. In this case, they aren’t arguing over money, however.

Arriaga claims that Inarritu is trying to steal credit for his work on Babel “by listing himself in the credits as the movie’s creator”. Inarritu, on the other hand, has written a letter to Arriaga (signed by some of the film’s cast members) criticizing him for trying to get media attention. “It’s a shame that in your unjustified obsession to claim sole responsibility for the film, you seem not to recognize that movies are an art of deep collaboration.” I tend to agree with Inarritu on that point, but sometimes you can’t help but feel for writers, whose contributions are constantly overshadowed by the director of a film. Either way, it seems like a pretty poor reason for their 9 year partnership (which included the previous movies 21 Grams and Amores Perros) to come to an end. And to think, it didn’t even end up winning Best Picture!

Borat DVD Comes With Bonus T-Shirt at Wal-Mart and Best Buy

The comedy hit of last year comes to DVD next Tuesday, and it’s probably going to sell a crazy number of copies within the first day alone. The question is, where should you buy it? Well you might want to consider picking up Borat from either Wal-Mart or Best Buy next week because both will have special bonus offers that include a free t-shirt. At Best Buy, they’re offering something called the “Set For Make Very Niiice Gift” which includes a “Very Niiice” shirt and a travel journal, meanwhile over at Wal-Mart they’re packing in a Glorious Kazakhstan t-shirt (I believe it’s the same one they sell on borattshirts.com). These are sure to be a hit at your next cocktail party… then again maybe not because everyone else is probably going to be wearing one too. Either way, free stuff is cool, right? You can also buy plenty of other witty unofficial Borat shirts over at cafepress.com.

Trailer for Hellboy Animated: Blood & Iron

The first Hellboy Animated movie Sword of Storms was just recently released on DVD, but its sequel has apparently been in the works for many months. I’m not sure how they determined the success of the first flick, considering that it didn’t screen in theatres and only aired on the Cartoon Network, but regardless, Hellboy fans should be pleased to hear that another one is on the way. Hellboy Animated: Blood and Iron is based loosely on the Wake the Dead comic series, and will once again feature the voices of Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, and John Hurt. To me these movies are at the same level as Marvel’s animated direct to DVD titles like Ultimate Avengers… they’re slightly above the quality of a Saturday morning cartoon, but not by much. Blood and Iron screened last week at the New York Comic Con, and will be released later this year on TV and DVD. You can get updates on the production over at the Hellboy Animated Production Diary; the trailer for the second installment is embedded below.

Cronenberg’s Scanners and The Fly To Get Remade

Another day, another remake announced. What else is new? It seems that Dimension Films have just greenlit a remake of David Cronenberg’s 1981 film Scanners, about a small underground group of humans with special psychic abilities. The new version will be directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, Saw III) and written by David Goyer (Blade, Batman Begins). For once it’s nice to see them remaking something that’s not a straight-up horror film… although there are definitely some horror elements to it. If nothing else, the movie should serve as a great illustration of how far exploding head special effects have come over the years.

On a related note, it seems that another Cronenberg movie may be getting remade in the near future. An update of The Fly has been rumoured to be in the works for a while now, but recently Cronenberg himself revealed that Nicolas Cage is interested in taking over Jeff Goldblum’s skin. Great… another classic film turned to parody by the King of Cheese. Well, I guess when Nic Cage comes a knockin’, you really can’t argue. David Cronenberg claims he is also working on an opera based on The Fly. Now that would be pretty weird. Read all about it over at Joblo.com.

Trailer for Talk To Me Starring Don Cheadle

Nowadays we probably forget what it was like for a radio DJ to be a significant cultural figure (okay, maybe Howard Stern still counts, although his audience sure ain’t what it used to be) but back in the day, local DJs could be a major influence on a lot of people. Don Cheadle is starring in the upcoming biopic Talk To Me, about Ralph Waldo “Petey” Greene, an ex-con and drug addict who became a well-known radio personality in Washington, D.C. in the 60’s. He was a major voice for the civil rights movement and helped popularize soul music, among other things. Okay, so it’s no Pump Up The Volume, but it seems like an interesting enough story. Talk To Me co-stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Martin Sheen, Cedric the Entertainer and Taraji P. Henson, and is directed by Kasi Lemmons (The Caveman’s Valentine). Check out the trailer now over at Yahoo! and see what you think.

Oscar Ratings Up Slightly From Last Year

Well despite all the criticism of Ellen hosting the Oscars this year (to me she was just there… she was too laid back to be really annoying), it seems that the ratings have improved since last year’s show. Not by much though. The show drew 39.9 million viewers, as compared with 38.8 last year — and somehow I doubt the host really had anything to do with it. I actually heard that this was still the 3rd lowest viewership for the Academy Awards in the last 15 years. A lot of people complained that last year’s nominees were too artsy for a lot of the mainstream audience (which they typically are every year), but this year I thought Martin Scorsese’s The Departed was a movie that a lot of people could root for. All I know is they need to shorten the damn show… 3 hours is long enough, but it always goes way beyond that too.

James Cameron Has Located the Tomb of Jesus

Ever since Titanic, James Cameron fans have patiently watched as the filmmaker embarked on a 10 year detour into the world of science and exploration. From Expedition: Bismarck to Ghosts of the Abyss to Aliens of the Deep, he was bitten by the bug of research and discovery and used his status as a well-respected director to delve into subjects that he found personally fascinating. I can’t blame him… I probably would do the same, given the opportunity. But now, just when he’s on the verge of getting back to the world of big budget fictional films, he has unveiled the strangest scientific inquiry yet: The Lost Tomb of Jesus.

This Sunday, March 4th, the Discovery Channel will air a new documentary produced by Cameron that showcases the finding of 10 small caskets outside of Jerusalem that they believe may have belonged to Jesus and his family. Markings on the ossuaries bear the names of Jesus, Mary and Judah, son of Jesus. Not only would this disprove the idea that Jesus rose from the dead and ascended to heaven, but DNA evidence also seems to show that Jesus and Mary may have been married. Talk about stirring the pot! For someone who is so into science, this seems like a pretty dubious claim, and I have to wonder if Cameron may have been talked into something simply because he knows nothing about it. He said himself that the evidence is “pretty darn compelling”… to the layman’s eye that is. Still I suppose he must really believe in it, and hopes to bring some credibility to the project with his name being attached. Heck, I’m curious now, but I don’t see how this will be taken any more seriously than previous such investigations. For more info and videos, visit the Discovery Channel website.

Grey’s Anatomy Spin-Off In The Works

Grey’s Anatomy has been one of the surprise television success stories of the past few years. After debuting as a mid-season replacement in 2005, it quickly caught on and became one of ABC’s most popular shows. I suppose I understand the appeal to a certain extent; it seems to be a mix of E.R. with a Desperate Housewives-esque dark sense of humour and an over-the-top soap opera love story. That said, I personally can’t stand the damn show, but I guess it could be because I’m a guy. Every 5 seconds they have to insert another heart-felt pop song, and it just gets very distracting.

Now when something is as successful as Grey’s Anatomy, you know that TV networks like to double down, which means (you guessed it!) a Grey’s Anatomy spin-off series is in the works. The pilot episode will be a two hour Grey’s Anatomy special that airs in May, depicting Dr. Addison Shepherd’s departure from the Seattle Grace Hospital. The new series will co-star Taye Diggs (Day Break), and the pilot is being directed by Michael Grossman (Charmed, Angel, Enterprise). Grey’s Anatomy is the new CSI.
