Blu-ray Brings Out The Big Guns: Pirates, Cars, Debbie Does Dallas

I know some people are sick of hearing about the high-def war, but there are also plenty of people watching with interest, waiting until the time is right to buy into either the HD-DVD or Blu-ray camp (or both). I’m moderately invested in the HD-DVD side right now, and I’ve been frustrated as Sony is currently pumping out new releases on Blu-ray at a much faster rate than HD-DVD. Initially I doubted whether Blu-ray could gain a foothold in the market, and then there were those pesky rumours of porn being banned on Blu-ray, which caused many people to predict Sony’s downfall. But now this week they’ve announced a handful of significant Blu-ray releases that just may change a few people’s minds.

Firstly, there are some major releases from Disney in the form of both Pirates of the Caribbean movies (May 22nd), and Pixar’s Cars (June 5th). More importantly though, Vivid Entertainment have secured the rights to release Debbie Does Dallas… Again on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray on March 28th, putting an end to the so-called Blu-ray porn ban. Add this to upcoming titles that include Reservoir Dogs, First Blood, American Psycho, The Usual Suspects, The Prestige, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Casino Royale… Sony’s looking pretty good right now. What exclusive HD-DVD titles do we have to look forward to? The Game, The Jerk, and… Half-Baked? I am starting to believe that both formats will co-exist for the foreseeable future.

  1. The Jerk is pretty classic though.

I think there is a possibility that by the time we get these technologies one will already have ‘won’, or gained a permanent foothold. I don’t really see one backing out just yet, so a minor advantage is probably all there’s going to be.

That being said, I couldn’t care less about some of these titles. Pirates, Cars, Casino Royale? I don’t need those. I already own Usual Suspects, Reservoir Dogs and Mr. and Mrs. Smith and I don’t feel a need to see any of them in HD. Does Rambo need HD?

There is probably going to be classics on either side though. I think that’s just something you have to get over, if you’re really craving this nicer picture that bad.
