Trailer for Nomad: The Warrior Hits the Web
Hey, remember a while back when it was reported that Kazakhstan was going to combat Borat’s stereotypes about their country by producing an epic movie about Kazakhstan nomads battling Mongolian invaders? Well the trailer has now arrived online apparently, and I have to say, it’s not quite what I expected. To start with, the movie stars Jason Scott Lee and Jay Hernandez, and it seems like they’re trying to disguise the fact that it’s actually a foreign film at all. There’s really no dialogue in the trailer, and it comes across looking like just another Hollywood historical epic.
The weird thing is, Nomad: The Warrior seems to have been released a couple of years ago already in Kazakhstan, and is just now being brought to North America by The Weinstein Company. Clearly the movie wasn’t produced solely as a P.R. rebuttal to Borat, although maybe the decision to bring it overseas was related. Nomad is directed by Sergei Bodrov, Ivan Passer, and Talgat Temenov (3 directors? Can that really be a good thing?). Check out the full domestic trailer over at IGN now and see what you think. Nomad: The Warrior hits select theatres on March 9th.

Production for Nomad: The Warrior has started in 2003, and this movie was planned for world wide distribution from its inception. Borat was not on anyone’s radar back then, and any claims that Nomad: The Warrior or its release or distribution are a response to Borat are misguided rumours.
I’ve watched the Kazakh language version of Nomad: The Warrior (released in 2005), and it’s a great movie. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes epic fights / war movies.
