Babel and Dreamgirls Take Top Prize At Golden Globes

Regardless of whether or not you believe the Golden Globes have any value, they at least help spark discussion about the films and TV shows most deserving of recognition from the past year. This year it was Babel and Dreamgirls that got the nod for best drama and best comedy/musical respectively. I do think Babel deserved to win (Scorsese got recognized as best director for The Departed after all), but I still have yet to see Dreamgirls. Musicals in this category always seem to have an unfair advantage though, because they are somehow seen as more artistic or meaningful than straight up comedies. How great was it to see Arnold presenting the final award of the night on crutches? I think he should host the Oscars.

In TV, Grey’s Anatomy and Ugly Betty were named the year’s best dramatic series and best comedy. Personally I was pulling for Big Love in the dramatic department, and just about anything other than Ugly Betty for comedy (I suppose it is the only new series of the bunch). For once I didn’t think Pixar had the best animated film of the year, but alas they still won for Cars. Check out the complete list of winners below and feel free to offer your own take on this year’s Golden Globes.

  1. No mention of Sacha Baron Cohen’s win!?!?

  2. Well considering who he was up against in that category I don’t think it was a surprise, although I hear his speech was pretty funny!

Acceptance speech. Not that funny, but makes you think of something from the movie that you can’t help but laugh at.

I’m satisfied Babel won. I thought it was the best movie of last year.

  4. I have to agree with Sean about “Dreamgirls”. I’ve seen it and it was entertaining but I’m not buying into the buzz. There’s one great performance in that movie and only because Hudson has lungs and her performance, even if mostly sung, is quite good. Everyone else in that is pretty forgettable.

I was surprised to see “Babel” take it home (not my favourite of the year but one of the better ones on the list) but the biggest disappointment for me was the foreign film category. I really enjoyed “Letters from Iwo Jima” but Eastwood didn’t deserve that win. It should have gone to “The Lives of Other” a more deserving and truly “foreign” film.

  5. Man The Lives of Others sucked. It started with an excellent scene showing how cold and inhuman the Stasi worked, but within minutes turned into a sappy piece of tragic love, and ultimately after watching the movie people will feel that living under that rule wasn’t that bad at all. They really were all nice people who just as much looked after the public as they did tyranisize them.

I had high hopes for that movie, but was very disappointed. Don’t waste your money.
