Stephen King’s Top 10 Movies of 2006

I still find it a little bit weird that Stephen King is now a columnist for Entertainment Weekly, writing on the subject of pop culture. I always thought of the guy as this seriously dark and intense horror writer, completely dedicated to his craft and uninterested in commercial fluff (despite the fact that most of his work is ultimately considered “commercial fluff” as well). But no, it turns out he’s pretty much addicted to all the same vices I am including movies, TV, books, music and more. This week he has unveiled his list of top 10 movies for 2006, and it’s pretty interesting if only because (as he reminds us in the column) he’s not a critic, but merely “another schlub in the popcorn line”. Plus he’s Stephen King. The list is as follows:

10. The World’s Fastest Indian
9. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
8. Waist Deep
7. Snakes on a Plane
6. The Illusionist
5. The Descent
4. Casino Royale
3. The Departed
2. United 93
1. Pan’s Labyrinth

As you might expect, there’s some horror in there (although maybe not as much as you might expect), and like many other people he considers The Descent to be the best horror flick of the year. I gotta give him props for including Snakes on a Plane too… so many people slagged that film because of the hype but it was a heck of a lot of fun. 1. I’ve never been a huge fan of King as a writer, his books do very little for me (except for “The Stand which happens to be brilliance and really should be a movie) but he has an interesting approach and take on pop culture. It’s a great list and I’m happy to see “The Illusionist” on it (it’s going to be on my list for sure) but I’m surprised that “The Prestige” didn’t make his cut. Interesting.
