Bryan Singer To Direct U.S. Version of Footballer’s Wives
Over the past few years, one of the hottest things going in England has been a TV series called Footballer’s Wives, a soap opera of sorts about a soccer (ie. football) team and their wives and family life. Earlier this year the series was cancelled in the U.K. due to dwindling ratings, but now they’re bringing the series overseas for a fresh start. ABC has greenlit a pilot, and word on the street is that Bryan Singer of all people is now attached to direct. I guess he’s looking to take a break from the blockbuster comic book franchises? I can’t wait to see all the X-Men and Superman fanboys tuning in to watch a soap opera just because Singer’s name is on it.
The U.S. version will of course change the series backdrop to be about American pro football since (sadly) no one cares about soccer over here in North America. If I remember correctly there was also an NBC comedy in the works a while back called The Secret Lives of Player’s Wives, which was basically about the same thing and could have potentially caused some confusion. I don’t think it ever made it to air though. Chris Brancato and Bert Salke (Boomtown, Tru Calling) will executive produce, with Marco Pennette (Crumbs, Ugly Betty) writing.
