Trailer for Reign Over Me Starring Adam Sandler

Back in 2002 when Adam Sandler starred in P.T. Anderson’s Punch Drunk Love, he blew a lot of people’s minds by stepping outside the typical roles we had come to expect from him. When you look at his performance in that movie it wasn’t necessarily a huge stretch for him, but to his credit he used his comedic mannerisms for a more dramatic — and dare I say artistic — purpose.

Now Sandler is returning to the screen for another dramatic role in Mike Binder’s Reign Over Me, but this one seems a bit harder to swallow. He plays a man who has lost his family in 9/11, and goes a little nutty as a result. Don Cheadle is his former college roommate who tries to help him get his life back on track. Now I have no problem with Sandler biting off something a little more serious, but the way he is presented in this movie borders on camp. His disshevelled hair almost resembles The Wedding Singer, and the whole 9/11 backdrop feels way too contrived. And you know, I hate to bring this up, but Mike Binder previously directed the film Blankman… are we supposed to take this guy seriously? Playing a mentally disturbed person is often seen as a shortcut to an Oscar, but something tells me Sandler won’t be in the running for this performance. Watch the exclusive trailer over at Moviefone and see what you get out of it.

  1. I’m not able to see this trailer, but I am slightly interested.

I have not seen many Adam Sandler movies, and even though the ones I have seen have been embarrasing, I don’t think I am as fed up with him as many other people. I like Don Cheadle. He is a serious actor, and I enjoy seeing him on screen. He has real presence on screen. I think this is another great choice of a role for him. He is the reason this sparked my attention.

I have no idea what Blankman is, and I’m sure it’s not very good, but give the guy 2-3 movies before labeling him.

  2. I couldn’t see the trailer at Moviefone either but you can see it on the website at http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/reignoverme/index.html

I’m not sure it’ll be Oscar worthy either and I agree that the death of the family in 9/11 is a little much (what happened to a good old car crash??) but it looks like it’ll be a decent film. I’m m ore of a Don Cheadle fan myself and would see it because of him but Sandler in Punch Drunk Love was surprisingly good and I’m willing to give him a shot.
