Monday Morning Box Office Report: Dec. 11, 2006
You know, every now and then the moviegoing public does something completely unexpected. Last weekend they embraced Mel Gibson’s epic Apocalypto wholeheartedly, bringing it to the top of the box office despite obvious limitations such as non-English dialogue and Mel Gibson’s own public image. I guess the marketing campaign really worked for this movie? I am still shocked that it beat out not only Happy Feet and Casino Royale, but also a feel good Christmas romantic comedy like The Holiday (which managed to place second). Blood Diamond was 5th, followed by Unaccompanied Minors which was 6th for the weekend.
1. Apocalypto — $14.2M
2. The Holiday — $13.5M
3. Happy Feet — $12.7M
4. Casino Royale — $8.8M
5. Blood Diamond — $8.52M
6. Unaccompanied Minors — $6.21M
7. Deja Vu — $6.07M
8. The Nativity Story — $5.4M
9. Deck the Halls — $3.92M
10. The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause — $3.31M

I am so happy that Blood Diamond made only 8 million dollars. Apparently it had a budget of 100 million. Perhaps this the end of Edward Zwick’s all too long career? Here’s hoping!
I will not see Apocalypto though. I thought the trailer looked like The Fugitive in the jungle, with piercings and naked indians. No interest.
Posted by Henrik on December 11th, 2006I’m surprised to hear that it managed to top the box office because we headed out on Friday night to see it and although we were running late, we had no problem getting in and a good seat to boot. I really didn’t think it was going to take the weekend but go figure.
