Justice League Live Action Series A Possibility?

I’m not sure how much truth there is to this next story, but I have to admit that I find it somewhat intriguing. As many are no doubt aware, the WB series Smallville has previously featured some guest stars in the form of other DC characters like The Flash and Aquaman, and now Green Arrow is also currently appearing in a number of episodes in the 6th season. They will all come together, along with Cyborg, in an episode entitled “Justice” scheduled to air on January 18th.

Now someone somewhere apparently said that the episode will act “as a launching pad for a possible series” (presumably a “Justice League” series). Dark Horizons references Comics Continuum as the source, but I can’t seem to find the actual quote anywhere. I have a hard time believing they would be planning another spin-off from Smallville after Aquaman crashed and burned, but a Justice League show could be fun. Do they really have to be teenagers though? With the success of Heroes, maybe they really are giving it some thought. Let’s just hope it doesn’t end up like that notoriously bad unaired 1997 Justice League pilot (check out more clips on YouTube).

  1. I enjoyed the Bruce Timm animated Justice League and JLU follow up but I don’t think a live action one will work. Unlike Heroes it would need to not take itself too seriously but it would also need to be grounded in some kind of reality. And they would need the big 3 Wonder Woman, Batman, and Supes.

  2. You’re right, without the big 3 they can’t really make a proper Justice League and with live action franchises of Batman and Superman on the go and Wonder Woman in development, Warner Bros won’t want these characters appearing on TV as well. Towards the end of Justice League Unlimited’s run, Bruce Timm and Co. weren’t allowed to use Batman villains anymore because they were appearing on that horrendous show, “The Batman”.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried a Smallville spin-off with a team comprised of DC characters who have had cameos and then filling out the ranks with second-string characters from the comics.

  3. To contradict myself it might still work if the second stringers were back by good writers from comedy, somebody like Patton Oswalt, and some people that have proven to be good action/drama writers like Paul Dini, or Ben Edlund. I could see how Booster Gold and Skeet could be worth watching for awhile.
