Akiva Goldsman Hired To Write Angels & Demons Screenplay
The first stage of Sony’s plan to recreate the success of The Da Vinci Code has just fallen into place. Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman has signed on to adapt Dan Brown’s precursor novel, Angels & Demons, for a cool $4 million. $4 million!!! A lot of people are reporting that’s the highest price ever paid up front for a screenplay. Hey I’m all for screenwriters getting more recognition in the industry but that’s a lot of money just for an adaptation of an existing book. And while I’m sure the returns on Angels & Demons will more than justify that amount, I can’t help but wonder if Goldsman is really worth it. Sure he won an Academy Award for A Beautiful Mind, but he’s also done some real stinkers: Batman & Robin… Lost In Space… I, Robot. Anyway, no word yet on whether or not Tom Hanks and Ron Howard have signed on for Angels & Demons but I’m sure they will soon enough. Sony is hoping to have it ready for sometime in 2008.

Right off the bat this production is starting off on a better footing because the source material is SO much better than The Da Vinci Code (I only hope they leave the last 30 pagest out. They were pointless).
I don’t think this is a good start on the money front though. If they’re putting this much up front for the script I can only imagine how much more they’re willing to pump into it. This is going to be a monster.
