Dual-Format HD-DVD Chip Due Next Year
With the Playstation 3 hitting stores in less than a week, and the X-Box 360 HD-DVD add-on already out, more and more people are starting to ponder HD-DVD players and what would be the best investment for them. The biggest barrier to consumer acceptance right now (aside from the fact that regular DVDs still work just fine for most people) is the fact that there are two competing formats, and different studios backing either side. To choose either Blu-ray or HD-DVD is limit your HD movie collection to a certain group of titles. Well, a company in Andover, Massachusetts thinks they have the solution. The consumer electronics unit of Broadcom Corp have been working hard on developing a universal chip that can play both formats. They are predicting that by the middle of next year, dual-format players will be on the market. As for how expensive these players will be… will that’s another story, but it’s definitely going to happen one way or another. Will this be the key to selling high-def DVDs to the average consumer?
