Trailer for Kyle Newman’s Fanboys Now Online
Right from day one, the producers of the movie Fanboys appealed to the Star Wars fan community by approaching TheForce.Net with a request for extras, inviting any and all Star Wars nerds to take part in this magical film. And can you blame them? As long as they can guarantee that Star Wars fans are aware of their little movie, this thing is going to take off on the strength of that following alone. Unfortunately for me, it takes a little bit more than the mention of Star Wars to get me interested in a movie.
Believe me, I want to like Fanboys. There aren’t nearly enough movies nowadays where social outcasts are the heroes, and yet there are plenty of people out there who identify with characters like Napoleon Dynamite. But now that the trailer for Fanboys has gone online it really confirms what I’ve thought all along… these guys don’t resemble any fanboys or geeks I’ve ever known. I don’t feel attached to these characters at all. The movie seems to rely on the assumption that Star Wars references are automatically funny, and, although I love the guy, a token appearance from William Shatner has long since lost its comedic value. I did enjoy seeing Seth Rogen as a Trekkie however (was his character modelled after Gabriel Köerner from Trekkies?). Check out the trailer and see how you feel about this one. Fanboys is expected to hit theatres sometime in 2007.

NOBODY can touch Gabriel Köerner… Whenever I hear somebody talk about a fan, I always picture Gabriel Köerner yelling at Peter on the telephone…Gabriel Köerner was awesome in Trekkies… I heard he was bullshit in Trekkies 2 though, so I never saw it. Can anybody confirm this?
Posted by Henrik on November 13th, 2006If, by “bullshit”, you mean getting a girlfriend and a job, then I guess he was bullshit in it.
Actually I thought his segment in Trekkies 2 was still one of the best parts. He’s shooting a Star Trek fan film and you find out that he got to fulfill a lifelong dream by doing some digital effects for Enterprise (he has since gone on to work on Battlestar Galactica, Lost, Serenity and Superman Returns… not too shabby).

Just for the record, I don’t think having a girlfriend and a job makes you bullshit.. Well, depending on the job.
Posted by Henrik on November 13th, 2006The trailer IESB put up is apparently a teaser that will find its way into upcoming Weinstein DVD releases. It’s not the theatrical trailer, nor is it really a very good representation of the movie. The movie goes much deeper than what is shown in the trailer (which is basically just some of the funniest scenes put together). There is the whole friendship aspect that the trailer does not hint at at all.
If you really wanna like the movie and are disappointed by the first trailer out there, don’t give up just yet. I already know that I’m gonna like this movie a lot, and not only because I like Chris Marquette. If you’ve heard Kyle Newman talk about this movie and how much of a Star Wars geek he is himself, you can’t think for one moment that the movie will make fun of the Star Wars fans. No way!
Oh, and by the way… the release date is gonna be April 20, 2007, the way it looks at the moment.
