The Fountain: A Sci-Fi Flick Without CGI
There’s a great article in this month’s Wired Magazine about Darren Aronofsky and his struggle to bring The Fountain to the big screen. I didn’t realize that this movie actually had to be made on the cheap after major stars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett pulled out of the project at the last minute along with all of the movie’s original financial backing. As a result, the effects were done without any CGI whatsoever. For example, the interstellar backdrops were created by Peter Parks, a marine biologist who photographs fluid dynamic systems of yeast, dyes, and oil and then magnifies then up to 500,000 times. I am not necessarily a die-hard Aronofsky fan; Pi was a bit too pretentious for me, Requiem For A Dream a little too bleak, and I can see The Fountain being extremely overwrought as well. But reading this article got me excited about seeing the movie, if not for the visuals then for the independent filmmaking achievement that it looks to be. Give it a read and see what you think. The Fountain hits theatres on November 22nd.

I really enjoyed “The Fountain” and if nothing else, it’s worth seeing for the effects and music alone. The last 15 minutes were excellent and could only have been made better by some of BC’s best.
