Brian De Palma Preps Untouchables Prequel

Lately it seems that if we’re not hearing about idiotic remakes, then it’s sequels and prequels. Seriously, even some well-respected filmmakers are getting the itch to revisit their past work by doing unnecessary continuations — including Brian De Palma. He will apparently start work on an Untouchables prequel next summer, based on a script written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Knockaround Guys, Walking Tall, Rounders).

The Untouchables: Capone Rising (is it just me, or does every prequel have the word “Rising” in it lately?) will focus on Al Capone’s early years and his ascent to power, which includes some dealings with corrupt cop Jimmy Malone. The big question is, will Sean Connery and Robert DeNiro return for the prequel, even though they’re now 20 years older? I hope not because I hate when they use CG and makeup effects to make actors look artificially younger. But then it begs the question, how can new actors possibly top such memorable performances? I think De Palma is just asking for trouble here.

  1. i have to say that this would be a mistake for DePalma to do a prequel to this fantastic flick. okay do a capone flick on where you see him coming into the gangester that he was, but dont make it an Untouchable flick. and i think that if DeNiro and Connery do this it would be awful for sure, and i like the both of them.
