Will Ferrell to Star in Basketball Comedy Semi-Pro
Like all popular funny men, Will Ferrell is on the verge of experiencing a backlash due to overexposure. Even some of his biggest fans are starting to get sick of his schtick, but in his defense I will say that he’s been changing it up a bit lately and taking risks with slightly different movies like Melinda & Melinda, The Producers and the upcoming Stranger Than Fiction. The thing is, for every offbeat indie film he’s doing, there are 5 more generic comedies like his latest project, a basketball comedy entitled Semi Pro.
The movie, which will co-star Woody Harrelson, is set in the 70’s and follows fictional ABA team the Flint Michigan Tropics and owner/coach/player Jackie Moon as they struggle to make it to the big leagues. New Line exec Kent Alterman will direct. While I’m all for seeing Woody Harrelson in a new comedy (and a basketball one at that… White Men Can’t Jump anyone?) these Frat pack sports comedies are starting to get a bit repetitive. I mean, you’ve got Dodgeball, Kicking & Screaming, Talladega Nights, and now Blades of Glory… do we really need another?

i wonder if Ferrell is just trying to do everything he can while the gettings good. or maybe he’s a Christopher Walken type figure who just doesnt care, and needs to keep busy.
Posted by Goon on October 31st, 2006I think Will Ferrell is really funny, but I haven’t seen all of those movies you listed. Actually I haven’t seen any of them.
But I liked him in Wedding Crashers and I was floored by him in Anchorman. I couldn’t believe how funny that movie was.
The only problem I have with this movie and Talladega Nights is that the sports are so american, the movies might not be released here. Talladega Nights hasn’t even gotten a theatrical release date here yet… Maybe this also goes for Blades of Glory. Wasn’t there a huge controversy concerning ice scating in the states at one point? That might have been good PR for the sport there, but here nobody wants to see ice skating.

I can’t wait for that Will Ferrell – Rob Schneider buddy movie, “Niblets,” to come out. That’s gonna rock some serious over-done movie jokes, dude!
