Sacha Baron Cohen’s Next Will Be Brüno After All

It’s being reported all across the web today that Sacha Baron Cohen’s mysterious new character is, in fact, Brüno, the gay Austrian fashionista featured in Da Ali G Show. Cohen’s next film has already ignited a bidding war, thanks to all the critical buzz around Borat. Universal Pictures have reportedly offered more than $42 million for worldwide distribution rights to the movie. The thing is, if Borat is not an appealing comedy for middle America, then Brüno is going to be completely off the map.

While I love his skewering of the fashion industry and pushing the envelope as far as homophobia is concerned, I’m not yet convinced that a feature length Brüno movie will be quite as fascinating. Still, I’d give Cohen a chance to try just about anything at this point. You can bet Brüno will be even more controversial and will likely have both pro and anti-gay groups up in arms. Jay Roach will apparently be on board for this movie in a producer role only, the director is still TBA. The new movie is currently slated to start production next summer.

  1. I laughed when I saw this news. They’re offering him a wack of money when they’re not even sure this one is going to fly. Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited to see it but I’m thinking this film may face the same problem as SOAP. We’ll see.

  2. Bruno is my favorite character, he always manages to bring out + exploit the absolute worst in people without even trying. The wiki article on him reads like a massive sociology essay.
The Bruno segments are often more dark and disturbing than “ha-ha!” funny. The things people are willing to say just because they think they’re on a fashion TV show or because some flaming gay guy is hitting on them never fail to make me laugh and lose sleep at the same time.
I think the only problem with a movie based around him will be how depressing it could get, especially if he stays in the American south like he did in Season 2 of Ali G.
