Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center Gets Exclusive HD-DVD Features
Continuing along with some of our recent posts about the high-def format war, here’s an interesting piece of news that could potentially make for a lot of disgruntled consumers. For all the people out there who have made up their minds that they don’t need HD-DVD or Blu-ray because they’re perfectly happy with standard DVDs, it sounds like the studios are about to start playing hardball. When Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center is released on DVD on December 12th, it will be released simultaneously on HD-DVD and Blu-ray. Here’s the thing: both the HD-DVD and Blu-ray versions will contain bonus features not found on the regular DVDs. In this case they are offering a still gallery, theatrical trailers, TV spots, plus 4 featurettes in high-definition: “Making of ‘World Trade Center’”, “Common Sacrifices,” “Building Ground Zero” and “Oliver Stone’s New York”. While this may or may not be a release that a lot of people care about, it’s the first time I’ve heard of exclusive HD features, and it may set a precedent that will see more and more studios trying to persuade consumers to go high-def. What do you think? Are exclusive special features enough to convince you? And do we really need to see behind the scenes footage in high-definition?

More and more the only feature I care about on DVD’s are audio commentaries. Alot of the behind-the-scenes bullshit is hacked down to short one-line pieces of an interview blended with tons of “mood-visuals” from the set, and huge chunks of the movie itself.
I appreciate the retrospective DVDs alot more, because they usually contain a documentary with all the key contributors that runs at about an hour or so. No more E specials please!
I don’t need to see them in HD. As long as they are releasing the substance of bonus material, which has become audio commentaries, I’ll be content.
Posted by Henrik on October 25th, 2006I’ve also heard that the upcoming HD-DVD of Poseidon will have a directors cut version of the film on it.
