Ron Howard To Direct Frost/Nixon
It looks like Ron Howard has set his sights on his next project, and it probably won’t be Dan Brown’s Angels & Demons. Universal Pictures snagged the movie rights to Peter Morgan’s play Frost/Nixon after Howard caught the show last week and liked what he saw. The play is based on the television interviews between Richard Nixon and journalist David Frost, one thousand days after Nixon’s resignation as a result of the Watergate scandal.
The era of “Tricky Dicky” was just slightly before my time, and although I’m not very familiar with the interviews in question, I am somewhat interested. After all, I’m sure there are some potential parallels to the current presidency. However, I have to wonder what this would offer that Oliver Stone’s Nixon does not. Stage to screen adaptations also often require some reworking (although the play reportedly uses bits of film footage to help tell the story). Normally I would say Howard would probably be recruiting his buddy Akiva Goldsman to write the screenplay but it appears that Morgan himself is doing the honours. In the play, Frank Langella stars as Nixon while Michael Sheen is Frost. No word yet on who Howard might have in mind for the film.

I think this will offer a different view on what happened. I’m not familiar with the play or the interviews either but this could bring to light something ‘new’. I’m just hoping Howard does a better job with this than with that pathetic excuse for a movie “The Da Vinci Code”. Now if only he can stay away from “Angels and Demons” too…
