Who’s Ready For War Games 2?
Looks like Hollywood is back at it again with yet another unnecessary knockoff sequel to a classic film. I will admit, I haven’t seen War Games in ages and I somehow doubt it holds up today, but I used to love this movie when I was younger. The movie stars Matthew Broderick as a computer geek who hacks into a military supercomputer and inadvertently starts the countdown to World War III. I remember hearing rumours about this sequel a few months ago, but now it looks like MGM has confirmed the existence of War Games 2 within a batch of direct-to-DVD sequels that also includes Legally Blonde 3, Cutting Edge 3, Into The Blue 2, and Species 4. Somehow War Games seems a little out of place in that list.
War Games 2 was written by Rob Kerchner (Addams Family Reunion, Carnosaur 3: Primal Species, Caged Heat II: Stripped of Freedom). Sounds like it’s in good hands. Seriously though, in some ways I can see how a modern version of this movie might work, updated for the internet age. On the other hand, maybe the only reason the original was so cool is because computers were in their infancy and hacking a military computer seemed like such a crazy concept at the time. What do you say… War Games 2, yay or nay?

i also liked this movie back in the day and i havent seen it for awhile and i dont know how it would hold up today. as for a direct to dvd sequel, i think that it will bomb, especially if matt bredrick isnt in it. look at inspector gadget with french stewart.
next your going to see a sequel to Project X which was another classic Broderick flick. i just hope to hell they dont even think of doing a Ferris sequel.
Posted by Chopper on September 7th, 2006I saw the original and I thought it was pretty fun, but it was over-the-top cheesy. I seem to remember chess being the Deus Ex Machina ending that saved the world.
I definitely doesn’t hold up. If they did a serious sequel, maybe it could work. I’ll never watch this though.
Posted by Henrik on September 7th, 2006I agree with Henrik. I think a serious sequel would be great but this direct to video release just sounds like a bomb.
Posted by themarina on September 7th, 2006Yeah I’m not a big fan of remakes or direct to video sequels but I think this movie could be updated and remade. Given the current poltical state with the War on Terror and technological state being well into the “information Age” I think it could be a real smart cyber-punk/ cloak and dagger(they should remake that Dabney Coleman classic too) picture.
