Prequel To John Carpenter’s The Thing In The Works

I suppose it isn’t all that surprising to hear that a prequel to John Carpenter’s The Thing is currently being talked about somewhere in Hollywood right now. It seems like sequels and remakes of just about every John Carpenter movie have been considered for years now, and good ol’ J.C. certainly has no qualms about selling himself out. The interesting tidbit about this news story is the fact that the movie is being produced by Strike Entertainment, the same people who did the Dawn of the Dead remake, Slither and 300. That’s a good sign, although it sounds like neither Zack Snyder nor James Gunn will be involved. I think we can safely count Kurt Russell out of this one too. I’m assuming that John Carpenter will probably executive produce to some extent, although this hasn’t been confirmed. The big question in my mind is, who will be doing the special effects? The Thing is widely held to be one of the most important FX movies of all time, and I’d sure hate to see a prequel that goes entirely CG (although something tells me that’s exactly what we’re going to get). Then again, if they can hook up with MastersFX, the people who worked on Slither, that might be pretty kickass. Stay tuned for more updates on this project.

  1. The Thing is one of two horror movies that is not total shit in my opinion.

I don’t mind a prequel at all, even though it would be weird. I can’t figure out what storyline they would do, the norwegian camp?

Anyway, I don’t think anybody should be opposed to this, because that would be glorifying a movie which is itself a remake, and a superior one at that.

You’re right about the effects, but I don’t think comparison would be fair. The Thing has some effects that are so crazy and nightmare-ish, it could never be recaptured.

  2. i really liked The Thing as well, and i wouldnt mind seeing what they would do with a prequel. i just hope no heartthrobs and teenie queens are in it.

  3. You’re right. I will say that if they turn it into a slasher ala Halloween I would be furious.

  4. A The Thing Prequel! OUTSTANDING! Rob Bottin’s Special Effects in John Carpenter’s Movie is OUTSTANDING!! He was SO Ingenious, using Simple “Things’ to Work His Science to Bring “The Thing” To Life! From Creamed Corn, to Heated Bubble Yum Bubble Gum!! Ha Ha Ha!! You can see the Bubble Yum in the Face of that Hapless Norwegian Victim.as it laid Steaming on the Table in the Lab at the American Science Research Station…the Guys looking upon it in Awe as well as in Disgust! “Bubble Bubble,Boil and Trouble!” I Hope Ol’ Rob will be in on the Personnel List! And,Also Stan Winston! His Work on “The Thing” was Essential in the Special Effects part of the Movie! The Kennel scene He worked with Rob on. He has Since made Movies Realistic…Case in Point..”Jurrasic Park”. “Congo”. “Aliens”. To name a few Projects under His Belt! Let’s Kick Back & Wait to see what these Experts have on Their Agenda,to Bring “The Thing” Back from The Ice and Scare the Bejesus out of Us Fans! I,Myself am working on a New Kind of Alien Threat! THIS Bon Bon that I am slowly but surely conjouring up,OUGHT to Keep Sci- Fi Lovers up all night Hoping The Dawn Chases the Boogy Man away! IT WON’T!! :o ) My Creature is REAL!! Well…Maybe NOT! (: But it’s BASED on “FACT”! When a Movie is made from the Finished Screenplay…I’ll See Y’all at the Show!! (I’M an Audience Member,TOO!)

  5. I’m excited about the prequel! My question is will we find out where “the Thing” comes from, what “its” doing here? I Always imagined that the creature is actually not harmful,(like us) it’s just trying to survive. IN the prequel there should be an extensive search of the space craft, it always fasinated me more than anything. There should also be another life-form on the ship found alive trying to stop the “The Thing”( Sort of like in “Critters” but not as cheezy?. I think that would create more confusion and isolation between the characters. Also, I hope the new film crew for this movie pays a lot of attention to John Carpenter’s Thing, keep the cast small, invest in a good solid soundtrack ( get Tyler Bates) and Build a good plot with extra-suspense. Stay away from big names in Hollywood, especially the young ones. If you need some good advice…I’m here for you.

  6. I think The Thing 2 as a part 2 would be great i loved the movie, the problem with movies now days they are too clean CGI is too much like a peace of glass no texture at all and its like looking at a animated movie, i loved org SFX the nitty gritty of movies somthing that is made by hand not witha computer which iam now told can reduce movie cost alot as there are a multitude of CGI designers out there ready to work for hardly nothing just to get ther name on the next big movie, almost like you scratch my back il design the ho,e movie for you if you put my name down in the credits.
Iam a SFX designer nothing huge i ahve worked with but iam trying but we are a dyeing breen because of CGI the best movies are done with SFX made by hand and also pupetry like star wars and also Evil dEAD as bruce camble as the star. wicked fx and they had hardly no budget at all.
Most of it is wax and food lol.. but i think the cruder the better alwayes looks more realistic.
Anyway i think the movie thing two should follow on With the theme of the game its really to obvious that the goverment will get notice of teh break though with somthing they could use as a new wepone.and then cannot in anyway control it like they alwayes do.
also the idea of the nors being aprt of it also as they were the ones to find it first .like they and there coverment was into it first finding it in the ice how did the nors finds it in the first place and have the materials to resume it also..hint hint???
So anyway the americans get hold of it or even better the english will love the chance to get another big film on the market. i have written a script for thing 2 as i have noticed so has 20 other people useing bounty hunters for the thugs and the thing is a alien crimanal all that jass it would be a good film is where did it come from what other worlds did it use to get where it was today and why did it crash on earth. and so on.. anyway ill keep my ears to the ground very much as iam setting up a website for films like this and any new producers out there or directors for small films.. see you all around .. iam sintheticnation see u all around

  7. First goddamn week of winter! The Thing is one of the best movies ever, i would love see either a sequel or a prequel, but your right, too much CG could make our beloved thing look a little too shiny and clean!
I think the movie has enough fans who are in the business to ensure that any sequel gets made with enough love and attention though.I have an image in my head of a thing transformation happening in the middle of an executive board meeting and always liked the idea of it being loose in the city, but im not sure what the prequel could be.If its all about the Norweigen camp it could end up being a bit too similar to the first one.

  8. Why a prequel? Why not a continuing storyline, possibly starting with an investigative/rescue team arriving at the American base to find out what happened? They unwittingly take The Thing back to a coastal base, then realising what they’ve got, it’s a race to neutralise it before it spreads to mainland areas?
This is one movie that never ages for me. I break it out now and again.

One more question and this has been bugging me since I first saw the movie – Who is the first victim of The Thing in the American base? Is it the doctor wearing the turtle neck type jumper who has the ‘fatal’ heart attack? Can anyone help?

    Branko.

  9. they should have the nxt thing starting off right where it ended w/K.R. then add some sort of servile restque to add on to the drama of what happen also more of the thing and where it came from to it reaching populated areas.

  10. the movie thing 2 should start off w/the ending w/K.R. then there should be more of indepth reserch into the mystery of where this thing come from as the creature takes over more people and more killings and horrific sceens and then it should have a team more exspose to it ending it fannally reaches populated areas…makeing part 3
