Open Forum Friday: Nicolas Cage… Cool or Annoying?
Alright, nothing too deep this week, just a simple question about one of this weekend’s box office stars: Nicolas Cage… cool or annoying? I’m always surprised by how many people seem to genuinely despise Nic Cage. He’s one of those actors that can turn people off of a movie just by hearing his name. I mean, with the Tom Cruise thing… as much as I think he got a bad rap, I understand it. But Nic Cage hasn’t really made many public blunders that I can remember. I don’t think it’s his image that’s the problem, so is there something about his acting that turns people off?
He’s been in some great movies, that’s for sure. His filmography is eclectic, but impressive: Raising Arizona, Adaptation, Leaving Las Vegas, Lord of War, The Weather Man… these are all awesome flicks in my opinion. But were they good because of Cage, or in spite of him? Cage’s stereotypical action hero roles in movies like The Rock, Face/Off and National Treasure seem to bother some people, but I don’t mind them. And although I’ve been chastized for it, I did enjoy World Trade Center! So let’s get a response from the general public here. How do you feel about Nicolas Cage as an actor, and why? Give us your thoughts here on Open Forum Friday.

SUPER COOLIO, come on!
Posted by Chopper on September 1st, 2006I think alot of it depends on the role he’s filling…
I couldn’t stand “National Treasure”, mostly due to his overacting and the ultra-cheese factor…
One of my fav guilty pleasures though, is “The Rock”, and alot of that is his annoying overacting in that one…
So go figure, I guess…
I’ll agree with you that he hasn’t had any serious public blunders, but naming your kid “Kal-El” is a bit extreme…If I would have even suggested that to my wife, I probably would have gotten kicked in the crotch…
Posted by CrzyDJM on September 1st, 2006He was awesome in Raising Arizona and Adaptation, but the guy is kinda nuts. I suggest trying to find some footage of him at ComiCon… he was wearing all white, unbuttoned shirt, long coat, rings on every finger, and just sounded like he was on a ton of drugs. As a friend put it, “he looked like the emperor of crazy town”.
Posted by Boooo. on September 1st, 2006For me, it depends on the movie. I love him in some roles and HATE him in others. I’ve decided I prefer to see him in the dramatic roles. As for “Wicker Man”, I’ll be skipping this one completely. Not because of him but because it just looks BAD. BAD. BAD. BAD.
Posted by themarina on September 1st, 2006He picks bad roles frequently, like Captain Corellis’ Mandolin. theres an inherent cheesiness about him. He can be very cool, but other times he’s so Tom Hanks-ish ‘everyman’ that it can be annoying.

I agree….the movie was good in theory (kinda like how Tomb Raider could have been good if continual from the Indiana Jones series), but Cage was very out of place.
Posted by Bassmasta-Baychuk on September 1st, 2006I vote for cool. It’s true about the split though, I had a buddy in university that hated him. It seems for the most part you either really like him or really don’t.

Yeah, he seemed to “ham it up” unneccessarily in that movie…Agreed though, it was a cool concept…Just cruddy delivery
Posted by CrzyDJM on September 2nd, 2006I love Nic Cage. He always brings a performance to the part, even in Bruckheimer productions.
He is a quirky guy, but he has managed to be in both quirky little films and big blockbusters, and I don’t think he feels out of place in any of them. I haven’t seen all of his movies, but I think he’s cool.
He does have stinkers, like anybody. 60 seconds… Awful movie.
Posted by Henrik on September 2nd, 2006Cool because he named his baby Kal-el, lucky son having a cool name.
Posted by wolf on September 2nd, 2006I also vote for cool. I could care less what the guy is like in his personal life. True he does bad movies like The Rock and Con Air. But he generally balances it out with good roles like in Adaptation or in The Weather Man which i thought he was amazing in.
