Is The Hobbit Planned For A 2007 Release?

A few years back, just as the Lord of the Rings trilogy was wrapping up, a lot of speculation suddenly arose regarding a prequel based on Tolkien’s first book The Hobbit. No one really wanted the Lord of the Rings movies to come to an end… well, except maybe Peter Jackson that is. While he “took a break” and went on to do King Kong, the one major sticking point was the fact that New Line didn’t own the rights to The Hobbit. A letter writing campaign from fans ensued, followed by a response from New Line assuring them that they would make The Hobbit happen eventually, whenever Peter and his wife Fran were available.

I’m not sure if the rights issues have been ironed out or not, but this week there came a sketchy anonymous report from someone in the industry who claims that The Hobbit may actually be coming sooner than we expected. The scooper had this to say: “I was in New Line’s NY offices to discuss upcoming projects when I clearly saw something very intriguing on a year planner. ‘The Hobbit’ was clearly marked on what looked like July 2007.” So there you have it. Not exactly much in the way of details, but I suppose it isn’t completely out of the question. Jackson is producing a few movies right now, but the only project he’s announced that he may be directing soon is an adaptation of the book The Lovely Bones. Keep your fingers crossed!

  1. Though it may come off as a bit anti-climactic to get the prelude after the epic it will be worth it for Smog alone.

  2. This should have been done first, but I’m glad its being done. Its a favourite of mine.

  3. I hope this is true. Jackson seems to be one of these guys that takes a break and then does everything all at once and then takes another break. I think there could be some truth to this but it surprises me that that’s ALL we’ve heard about it with less than a year left…

  4. Yeah that’s the thing that has me a little dubious. The LOTR movies took so long to prepare for with all the effects and costumes and sets. The Hobbit would be another monstrous undertaking, and July 2007 feels way too close to pull it off.

  5. i agree that this should have been done before the triology. i am looking forward to this one being done.
