Is the Aqua Teen Hunger Force Movie a Disaster?

I don’t usually pay much attention to the reader reviews that are posted on sites like Ain’t It Cool News. After all, they are usually written by average people without much in the way of qualifications, and are based on test screenings of unfinished films. Don’t get me wrong… I think bloggers and amateur reviewers can be a valuable resource (at least I hope they can!), but reviews are kind of hard to put in context when you don’t have any background on the person writing it (ie. what their preferences are, their previous movie-going experience, etc.).

Still, every now and then I read a report on AICN where the bottom line about a movie is clear as day, regardless of the person writing it. This week a guy who calls himself “The Raindog” submitted a review of the upcoming Aqua Teen Hunger Force feature film, and what he had to say about it was not pleasant… not pleasant at all:

“The first 10 minutes was like a sub par episode of aqua teen, then it stretched on and on, and on. With a running time of 75 minutes, it was quite a feat to make it seem like 4 hours… it bored me to the point of wanting to leave, but I knew the end had to come soon, so I stuck it out.”

He also mentions that the theatre was filled with other hardcore Aqua Teen fans, who didn’t laugh much throughout the film. To me this seems like a no brainer. Aqua Teen Hunger Force is one of my least favourite Adult Swim shows, but there’s a reason why the episodes are only 10 to 15 minutes long. Seeing 75 minutes of bad animation on the big screen with no plot and a lot of forced bizarre jokes sounds like a disaster to me. When I first heard about a full length Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie I was interested to see it, but now that I’ve heard this report it has made me realize how ill-suited it really is for a movie. Now I’m wondering if it will even see the light of day.

  1. of all the Adult Swim shows, it seemed obvious to me that ATHF would make the shittiest movie. Its the only Adult Swim show thats currently on DVD that i havent bought. I dont care much for it.

  2. I think it’s one of the best Adult Swim shows, personally. But, it definitely seems like a bad idea for a movie. You’re exactly right when you say there is a reason for the episodes being 15 minutes. I can’t imagine it working in an extended format like that.
