Monday Morning Box Office Report: Aug. 21, 2006
I’ve read a few conflicting reports today, but it looks like Snakes On A Plane did indeed come out on top at the box office this weekend, just barely inching out Ricky Bobby with about $15 million. It’s hard to say whether or not this should be considered a disappointment. With all the marketing money that was spent by New Line, they were certainly hoping for more… but on the other hand, the internet community sometimes makes things seem a lot more hyped than they really are. Maybe DVD is where this movie will really find its audience, although it’s a lot of fun to see in the theatre as well. On the bright side, this may reduce the chances that other studios will force a SOAP rip-off. But what does this mean for the sequel??
1. Snakes on a Plane – $15.2M
2. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby – $14.1M
3. World Trade Center – $10.8M
4. Accepted – $10.1M
5. Step Up – $9.87M
6. Barnyard – $7.49M
7. Little Miss Sunshine – $5.67M
8. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest – $5.01M
9. Material Girls – $4.62M
10. Pulse – $3.53M

with SoaP, a number of things are now apparent
1) the Internet is not real life
2) not enough people commit to what they claim will like at least ironically. way more people were teetering one way or the other. they found the idea of SoaP funnier than actually going to see it – even though its clear to me now they should
3) not releasing it for reviews actually probably scared people away
4) they waited too long to pull the trigger
5) R rating in the US took a big chunk out of the target audience.
it will probably get some good repeat business and word of mouth but otherwise it appears to have suffered the fate of Slither.
Posted by Goon on August 21st, 2006I was particularly happy to see the film bomb a bit. I did not like it at all, and thought it was nothing more than a B-movie from the 70s and 80s. Most of those responsible for the overhype might even want to wait till it’s out on DVD, so they can rent it and watch with friends, etc.
Cheers,
Carlos

Its very much like Commando or an 80s Jackie Chan flick, but gorier and a little funnier. The reasons you disliked it are the very reasons people went to see it.
Posted by Goon on August 21st, 2006Anything that is overhyped always makes me feel leery. The commercial is basically the movie.
Posted by Bassmasta-Baychuk on August 21st, 2006i dont agree with that statement…. The commercial cant show the gory parts or some of the one liners that got the whole theater applauding.
just a question, for anyone else was there KIDS in your theater? Canada has laxer rating system I know, but I was surprised when a family came in with 5 children.
Posted by Goon on August 21st, 2006CGE gore doesn’t count in my books. And one liners, maybe.
I dunno…I’d watch, but an not attracted to it.
Posted by Bassmasta-Baychuk on August 21st, 2006i was alittle surprised that it didnt make as much as i thought. oh well they tried i guess.
Posted by Chopper on August 21st, 2006There were actually quite a few kids in the showing I saw, all with parents. The violence was nothing worse than you can see on cable tv, and the kids had probably already read the famous explative laden line on the internet already. Whatever.
I really enjoyed it, which is saying something after how much it had been built up. I’ll buy the dvd for sure if they add in a few extras.
Posted by Dave on August 21st, 2006If you by the DVD wait until it in used. You’ll pay less than half from new.
